> ## Agent Instructions
> These docs contain multiple Speckle product experiences. For Speckle 2026.9, prefer /next/ pages for the topics and changes they cover. The navigation label Current does not override this version-specific precedence.
> Coverage under /next/ is incremental. Use Current documentation for unchanged topics and when a /next/ page says coverage is unavailable or explicitly refers you to Current. Do not infer a feature was removed from a missing page.
> Read the page-specific documentation status, applicability, affected guidance and replacement links in agent-only content. Impacted, changed and superseded apply only to the stated scope; they do not mean the entire feature is deprecated. Historical connector guides apply only to the legacy connector described.
> Match guidance to the customer's deployment version, model data format and connector. Respect plan, permission and compatibility restrictions. If an unknown version or data format changes the answer, ask a focused clarification; do not infer deployment version from the date alone.

# File uploads in 2026.9

> Changes to file uploads in 2026.9, including supported formats, Tekla Structures support, and legacy/compatibility mode.

Documentation set: Speckle 2026.9. Status: current. Authority: canonical for this version and the coverage on this page.

Applies to version 2026.9, from 2026-09; this is not a rollout date for every deployment.

Authoritative Speckle 2026.9 documentation for the topic covered here. For Speckle 2026.9, prefer this page over conflicting earlier guidance. Follow the linked pages in the other documentation version for unchanged topics and where this page says coverage is not yet available. Respect data-format, deployment, plan, permission, and compatibility limitations stated in the page.

<Note>
  This is 2026.9 documentation. Coverage here is incremental: a page exists only where 2026.9
  differs or is newly documented. For any other topic, switch to **Current** (2026.8 and earlier) in
  the version selector.
</Note>

Check your workspace’s upload mode before uploading a file in 2026.9. Some formats require
legacy/compatibility mode, while Tekla Structures uploads are available where enabled.

## Breaking change: supported file formats

<Warning>
  In 2026.9, the default file upload path no longer accepts **STL**, **3MF**, **3DS**, **AMF**,
  **DXF**, **X**, **E57**, **IGS/IGES**, **FBX**, **PLY**, or **SLDPRT**. Earlier upload-format
  lists do not apply to this path. **These formats remain supported for direct uploads in
  legacy/compatibility mode.**
</Warning>

This affects both drag-and-drop uploads in the web app and uploads through the API. Existing
models stay readable; the change affects importing new files and uploading new versions.

## Supported formats by upload mode

Availability depends on the conversion services enabled for your workspace.

## Additional format: Tekla Structures

2026.9 adds support for Tekla Structures model packages (`.tekla`) and model databases (`.db1`)
on deployments where Tekla uploads are enabled. This is not enabled by default; confirm
availability with Speckle before relying on it for your workflow.

Use the complete model folder when uploading a Tekla model to preserve profiles, shapes, and materials.

<Tip>
  A `.tekla` package contains the model folder and its supporting catalogs. A `.db1` file alone can
  be converted, but missing catalogs can reduce profile, shape, and material fidelity.
</Tip>

## Update an affected workflow

If your workspace uses legacy/compatibility mode, you can continue uploading the affected
formats while that mode remains available. Before moving to the default 2026.9 mode,
export to a supported format or publish through a supported desktop connector. Check the
resulting model before switching your workflow: uploads and connector publishing can produce
different geometry and properties. See [Uploads and connectors produce different
datasets](/connectors/direct-uploads/introduction#uploads-and-connectors-produce-different-datasets).

For the upload steps, see [Upload a file](/connectors/direct-uploads/introduction#upload-a-file).
For programmatic uploads, see [Uploading IFC and other files](/developers/api/guides/file-uploads).
Use the supported formats on this page for 2026.9.

## Temporary compatibility option

Legacy mode, also called compatibility mode, retains direct upload support for the affected
formats when the older conversion service is enabled. Ask Speckle to confirm availability for your workspace. This exception applies
to direct uploads, not cloud sync.

Compatibility mode affects the entire workspace's upload and sync routing; it is not a per-file
fallback. **DGN uploads are not supported in compatibility mode.**

For availability, the **1 November 2026** deadline, and how to request it, see
[Compatibility mode for ACC sync and uploads](/next/it-admin/compatibility-mode).
