# Speckle's data model is changing: what to do next

> What changes when Speckle moves to its new data model, and what to do about it

## What's changing

Speckle is moving to a new data model that lets it handle much larger projects, and lets it work faster once you're on it. Under the hood, your models get organized in a way that's built for scale, and that also makes newer features — including Speckle Intelligence — able to understand how parts of your model relate to each other, not just what each part is.

## What isn't changing

How you work day to day stays the same. Publish and load through your connectors, view and share in the web app, exactly as you do now — just faster once your project has migrated.

## Why we're doing it

Bigger projects were starting to slow the old format down. The new one is built to hold much larger models without that penalty, and it opens the door to querying and understanding your data in ways the old format couldn't support — including how Speckle Intelligence works out what connects to what.

## Who should pay closer attention

Most people don't need to do anything. If you publish and load through Speckle's desktop or web connectors, your workflow carries on unchanged.

The one group worth flagging: if you rely on **ACC sync** or **drag-and-drop uploads**, and something downstream of Speckle — a script, a custom report, another tool — depends on the old data format, that connection could break after the migration. If that happens, ask us to switch your workspace into **compatibility mode**, which keeps things running in the old format while you sort out the downstream fix. Compatibility mode is a temporary bridge — it's available until **1 November 2026**.

## What you should do now

    keep working either way — updating just gets you the performance improvements sooner and avoids
    any last-minute scramble.
