Connect Trimble Connect to Speckle for automatic model synchronization. Pick files from your Trimble Connect projects, and every new version uploaded to Trimble Connect becomes a new version of a Speckle model — no manual re-uploads.
The Trimble Connect integration is in beta and available on Team and Enterprise workspace plans. Reach out if you want early access.

How it works

  • Browsing is personal. You sign in to Trimble Connect with your own Trimble ID to browse projects, folders, and files. Your Trimble login stays in your browser — Speckle never stores it.
  • Background sync uses a service account. Trimble Connect does not offer application-level (machine-to-machine) access, so each Speckle workspace connects one Trimble account as its service account. Speckle encrypts that account’s credentials, refreshes them automatically, and uses them to download new file versions in the background.
  • Changes are detected by polling. Trimble Connect has no webhooks, so Speckle checks your synced files for new versions every 5 minutes.

Prerequisites

  • A Speckle workspace on an eligible plan, and workspace admin rights to set up the service account (any workspace member can browse and create syncs afterwards)
  • A Trimble Connect account with access to the projects you want to sync
  • A Trimble account to act as the service account — use a dedicated account (for example [email protected]) rather than a personal one, so background sync does not break when someone leaves the team
  • The service account must be invited to every Trimble Connect project you plan to sync (any role that can view and download files)

Connect the service account

Workspace admin only. Do this once per workspace.
1

Open Trimble Connect

Open any project in your workspace. In the project sidebar, go to IntegrationsTrimble Connect.
2

Connect the service account

In the header, select Connect service account. Trimble’s sign-in page opens. Sign in with the service account (not your personal account) and approve access. You return to Speckle. The header shows Background sync: with the service account email and a green indicator.
Speckle encrypts the service account’s credentials before storing them. They are used only for server-side file downloads and background synchronization, and are refreshed automatically so they never expire from inactivity.
Trimble may skip the login screen if you are already signed in to Trimble in that browser. When connecting the service account, Speckle always forces the sign-in screen so you can pick the right account.

Connect and sync files

Any workspace member can do this after the service account is connected.
1

Sign in to browse

Go to IntegrationsTrimble Connect and select Connect to Trimble. Sign in with your own Trimble ID.
2

Pick a project and files

Choose a Trimble Connect project from the selector in the header. Projects from all Trimble Connect regions are listed; the region appears next to each project name. Browse the folder tree and select the files you want to sync. Use search and the source filter to narrow the list.
3

Configure Revit options if needed

For Revit files, optionally set a view name and reference point in the selected-files panel. See Revit options.
4

Create the sync

Select Create sync. Each synced file gets its own Speckle model, named after the file and its folder path. The first version imports immediately. After that, every new version uploaded to Trimble Connect is picked up automatically.

Keep models in sync

  • Speckle polls your synced folders every 5 minutes. A new file version in Trimble Connect typically appears as a new Speckle version within 5 minutes plus conversion time.
  • The Syncs panel on the Trimble Connect page shows every sync in the project, its latest status, and links to the Speckle model.
  • You can pause and resume a sync from the Syncs panel. Paused syncs keep their existing versions; they stop watching for changes.
  • If a synced file is moved or deleted in Trimble Connect, Speckle pauses the sync after a few failed checks and emails the sync’s creator.

Revit options

View name

By default, all elements of a Revit model are imported. To import only the elements visible in a specific 3D view, enter the view’s exact name (case-sensitive) when creating the sync.

Reference point

Choose which Revit coordinate origin the model is aligned to: Internal Origin (default), Project Base Point, or Survey Point and Shared Coordinates. Use the same setting across models that need to align in Speckle.

FAQ

Yes. Speckle only reads and downloads files from Trimble Connect. It never writes to, modifies, or deletes anything in your Trimble Connect projects.
Speckle checks for changes every 5 minutes, so expect the new version within 5 minutes plus the time it takes to convert the file.
Autodesk lets an application access files with its own credentials. Trimble Connect currently only supports user-level access, so background downloads run as a real Trimble account. Speckle stores that account’s credentials encrypted and rotates them automatically. Trimble has application-level access on its roadmap; once available, the service account step will go away.
Workspace admins only. Browsing and creating syncs is open to all workspace members.
Yes. Background downloads run as the service account, so it needs access to each project you sync. Files in projects it cannot access fail to download.
Existing Speckle versions are unaffected, but background sync stops: syncs pause on their next check and their creators are emailed. Reconnecting a service account resumes them automatically.
Two common causes: the file was moved, renamed, or deleted in Trimble Connect (Speckle pauses after several failed checks), or the service account’s access was revoked or its login expired. Check the file in Trimble Connect, then reconnect the service account if needed and resume the sync.
Make sure the Trimble account you signed in with is a member of that project. Projects from every Trimble Connect region are listed, so region is not the issue.
Yes — create a sync for the file in each Speckle project. Each is tracked independently.
Yes. Deleting the model removes its sync. The file in Trimble Connect is untouched.
