This is 2026.9 documentation. Coverage here is incremental: a page exists only where 2026.9 differs or is newly documented. For any other topic, switch to Current (2026.8 and earlier) in the version selector.
When you load a model you get the objects themselves: geometry, properties, materials. The model also records how those objects relate to each other. Which level a wall sits on, which room it is in, which block definition an instance uses, what it is hosted on. The Explore node surfaces those connections. Plug in any Speckle Object and it works out which relationships exist for that object, then creates an output for each one.
Explore supports versions published with 2026.9 onwards, loaded with the current Load node. Versions published before then do not record these connections, so there is nothing for Explore to show. See Grasshopper in 2026.9.

Use Explore

Inputs:
  1. Add a Speckle Object input of the thing you want to explore. Speckle Objects, Speckle Geometry, Block Instances, and Collections are all accepted.
Outputs:
  1. An output is created for each relationship the model records for that object. The set of outputs changes with what you plug in, so a Revit object and a Rhino object produce different ones.

What you can expect to find

The outputs depend on the source application, because different applications record different things. Some examples:
  • A wall gives you its level, the rooms it bounds, its type properties, and its sub-elements.
  • A block instance gives you its definition, and the other placements using that same definition.
  • A whole-model Collection gives you every level and its elevation.
  • A structural member from ETABS gives you its analysis results.
Explore does not repeat what the object already carries. Material, colour, and Collection path are already set on the object when it loads, so they are not shown again here.

Work with analysis results

Structural results come out as several outputs of the same length, one per column of the results: result type, load case, component, station, step, and value. Each row lines up across all of them. Use the normal list tools to group them. Sift Pattern or Member Index on the load case output pulls out just the results for one case. Outputs only appear for the columns your model actually uses, so a result type without a station does not produce a station output.

Objects Explore cannot read

Some objects have no connections to show:
  • Objects from a version published before 2026.9. This is by far the most common reason, because older versions do not record connections.
  • Objects loaded with a Load (legacy) node. See Upgrade Grasshopper to 2026.9.
  • Objects from inside a block definition, rather than a placed instance.
  • Objects that were never loaded from Speckle.
In these cases Explore shows a remark on the canvas explaining why, and produces no outputs. Republish the model with the current Publish node to create a version Explore can read.

FAQ

Explore reads a local copy of the model that your machine may have cleared. Reload the model and Explore picks up its connections again.
The usual cause is a version published before 2026.9, or a Load (legacy) node. Republish with the current Publish node, then load with the current Load node.
